There is an important meeting of the Upper Cape Regional Transfer Station Board of Managers this coming Wednesday, August 2nd at 10:15 a.m. in the Waquoit Meeting Room at Mashpee Town Hall (16 Great Neck Rd N, Mashpee, MA 02649). At the meeting, it is expected that the Board of Managers will vote on a lease with Cavossa Disposal. This lease will allow Cavossa to begin using the rail line running from North Falmouth to the Cape Cod Canal for its private waste disposal operations. Over the past several months, we have worked diligently to encourage the four Towns of Bourne, Falmouth, Mashpee, and Sandwich to reconsider issuing a contract to a private business to operate a waste hauling operation through Bourne. Our concern is that this would create a significant hurdle in creating the Bourne Rail Trail and there is no pressing need to restore limited freight train service at this point in time. The Bourne Selectmen have endorsed the continued study of the Bourne Rail Trail and share our concerns about the lease for the Transfer Station and what it means for completing the project and what it means for Bourne. We have expressed our concerns to the other towns, including Falmouth, but have not yet received the support of the Selectmen. A strong show of support for the Rail Trail at the Board of Managers meeting on Wednesday may persuade the Managers to delay their vote, at least pending further consultation with their respective elected officials. Your presence in the room at this meeting and Selectmen meetings in the near future is critical in demonstrating support for the Bourne Rail Trail. We anticipate that following the Board of Managers meeting on Wednesday any potential contract will also be reviewed by the Selectmen in Bourne, Falmouth, Mashpee, and Sandwich before the contract is finalized.
